McCloud’s Closure- When writing a comic book there are different panels. There are splits in the panels which can lead to unresolved thoughts. People only have the ability to use their five senses to interpret what goes on inside the “gutters” but they assume that there is more out there. Our senses can only show a small amount of the world. An example of people only using their five senses are infants. Infants can only use their five senses and they are too young to try and form connections to something that is incomplete. When they learn how to come to conclusions with evidence that is given them, it is called closure. In the “gutters”, it is a break where nothing goes on. The gutter helps to form closure. When a photo is displayed in the first panel you can come to an understanding what is going to happen in the next panel. The artists use 6 main forms of closure to help the readers understand what is happening in the gutters. Each form of closure they use can help show the writer’s style, meaning, and purpose in writing. These forms can help portray the similarities and differences in the author’s writing style. Overall, gutters are an important why to show closure and there are many different writing techniques to show the closure in between the gutter.
